Background
The Department of Neurosurgery receives approximately 175 spinal referral cases from general practitioners each week. Only 25% of these referred patients are invited for an initial examination, and of those, only 30-35% eventually undergo surgery. This means that a large proportion of the patients referred to the hospital do not require surgery or do not meet the treatment criteria.
The current process is resource-intensive for both the hospital and general practitioners, resulting in numerous administrative and clinical touchpoints. There is therefore a significant need to improve the quality of referrals and optimize the triage process to ensure that the right patients receive an initial examination and, if necessary, proceed to surgery.
This initiative stems from the Health Innovation Aarhus partnership, where decision-makers from the region, hospitals, municipalities, research institutions, and companies collaborate to find shared solutions to healthcare challenges.
